HomeSharing: Bringing Homeowners and Home Seekers Together

Noël Bonam, AARP Maine State Director, provides bi-monthly updates about programs to help Mainers thrive

With inflation rates on the rise along with food, clothing, health care and many other necessities, it should come as no surprise that many older adults are also vulnerable to rising housing expenses. Even with recent cost of living increases, Social Security benefits aren’t keeping up with inflation and it can be daunting to find appropriate and affordable housing, particular for older Mainers on a fixed income.

One solution that may offer a viable option comes in the form of homesharing. An increasing number of adults 50+ are opening the doors to their homes to long-term or sometimes short-term housemates. The cooperative living arrangement of homesharing can help save the homeowner money and provide a safe, affordable living option for the roommate. At its core, homesharing aims to create mutually beneficial arrangements for both parties.

The straightforward process involves personalized interviews and applications, setting clear expectations and matching individuals based on lifestyle, location and needs. Likely homeshare candidates could be just about anyone! They can be people of any age, nannies, new teachers, students, newly divorced, widowed or separated individuals, travel RNs, doctors or physical therapists, among others.

The benefits of homesharing can go far beyond the financial rewards. The program allows for the efficient use of existing space, reducing our environmental footprint and can provide enjoyable interactions for both parties. However, successful homesharing can also offer other benefits including much-needed companionship. In a rural state like Maine, loneliness can be a significant cause for concern among older residents.
