Reliable transportation can connect people to jobs, health care and groceries, as well as volunteer opportunities, outdoor recreation, and needed social connection. Many rural communities in Maine lack public transportation.
Age-Friendly organizers in York and Cumberland counties have stepped up to the challenge and advocated for local and regional solutions with notable success. Two programs in partnership with the Regional Transportation Program (RTP), have recently expanded their services with support from Age-Friendly groups and municipal partners.
One initiative expanded in August to serve Raymond and Windham with plans to add stops in Standish, Gorham and Harrison. (Click here to follow a link about rides in Raymond and Windham.)
The other program recently added a pilot project to better serve riders in Biddeford, Saco and Old Orchard Beach as part of the regional transit program known as Biddeford -Saco-Old Orchard Beach Transit, or BSOOB-Transit. (Click here to follow a link about rides in these towns.)
