The Medicare Savings (MSP) program, administered by the Maine Department of Health and Human Services, helps Mainers pay Medicare premiums and other out-of-pocket healthcare costs. This is how it works.
Gives back the deducted premium!
The monthly Medicare Part B premium is $185 and is automatically deducted from the Social Security benefit. When someone qualifies for the Medicare Savings program, that deduction ends, and other costs such as co-pays, co-insurance, and deductible amounts may also be reduced. The benefit levels are income-based. There is no asset test or estate recovery requirement.
The Qualified Individual program is available to singles with a monthly income at or below $3,261 and to couples with a monthly income at or below $4,407. For qualifying individuals, the Medicare Part B premium will no longer be deducted from their Social Security check, freeing money to pay for groceries, utility bills, and other everyday expenses.
The Qualified Medicare Beneficiary program is available to singles with a monthly income of $2,413 or less and couples with a monthly income of $3,261 or less. The program covers Medicare Part B premiums, deductibles, copays, and coinsurance. People who qualify will no longer pay a portion of any Medicare-covered services, removing financial concerns that prevent people from getting needed care. Savings can be used for other living expenses.
Those eligible for the MSP may also be eligible for the Extra Help Program that reduces Part D premiums, deductibles, co-insurance, and other costs. AARP estimates that this program can save an individual up to $5,000 a year on medication costs alone.
