Art together for creative fun and socialization
In 2023, the Living Well Committee began discussing meaningful ways to make a positive impact in the community. By then, the committee had already established partnerships with local organizations, including Spectrum Generations and Catholic Charities. Since that initial conversation, the committee has accomplished a lot such as: creating an MOU with KVCAP to offer a once a month trip from a local housing unit to the grocery store, created a Wellness Event Calendar with the help of the community connections grant received, creating a community native to Maine perennial garden, and planning an event for older adults as a part of Madison’s Annual Christmas Celebration for 2025.
One of Living Well’s most significant successes so far has been the Wellness Event Calendar, and we’re excited to be planning our second one now! The first Wellness Event Calendar featured free public events focused on mental, physical, and nutritional health. So far, we’ve offered activities like a snowshoeing class, art workshops, a SNAP-Ed nutrition class, and a canning workshop. Last month, when we planted our Native to Maine Perennial garden, we received help from Ann Dorney and her horticultural students, committee members, a local volunteer, the Madison Highway department, and our local TV station, which caught the event on camera to share with the public.
Our upcoming Wellness Event Calendar will feature our Christmas Celebration to help alleviate social isolation during the winter months, as well as new classes offered by Redington Fairview Hospital for adults and caregivers of adults living with a chronic condition. The Living Well for Better Health (Redington-Fairview Hospital program) classes will run for six weeks and focus on managing frustration and isolation, nutrition, exercises to improve strength, flexibility, and endurance, as well as effective communication with family, friends, and healthcare professionals. Living Well in Madison also hopes to offer additional art workshops and outdoor activities as part of the next Wellness Event Calendar.
The Living Well Committee is grateful for the grants received, which enable us to offer these events. We are also thankful to all community partners who share our vision of providing age-friendly events and help make them happen.
