Family Service Manager and General Assistance Director, York Community Services Association
Collecting donations for their heating fund has become an annual tradition in York. The York Community Service Association (YCSA) turns fundraising into a town-wide, community event! In early December, volunteers stay “out in the cold – literally – accepting donations for their heat fund. The event begins at 9 am and continues until midnight.
This has been going on since 2013 and YCSA estimates that about $500,000 has been collected thru the years.
Janie Sweeney, YCSA Family Services Manager and the General Assistance Director, tells us:
“Last year, we raised $36,000 for our fund and all of it was used. Folks in York truly understood the need for caring for our neighbors and overwhelmingly support the effort. This year, with all the changes, we expect the need to be greater. We don't want anyone to be cold in the winter!”
Michelle Surdoval, the Director of YCSA and the driving force behind Age-Friendly York, emphasizes that this fundraiser is a true win-win for all involved. There is little to no cost, it raises awareness in the community and brings in much-needed funds.
