Volunteers, Staff, and Partners gather at the Trafton Center
The Healthy Living Expo in Sanford has been part of the community for over ten years. 20+ vendors offer information on widely varied topics – ranging from insurance to bicycles! Exhibitors include many local health resources. The Sanford Police Department and Fire Dept. provide safety information and local banks give information on fraud prevention.
The York County Sheriff's Department provides for safe prescription medication disposal.
Robin Bibber, director of the Sanford-Springvale YMCA Trafton Senior Center, said that the Expo was going on before she became director in 2019. The Trafton Senior Center is a regional center for older adults age 50 plus located in Sanford. The Expo is held at the Y, as it outgrew the space at the Center.
Thriving in Place: Age-Friendly Sanford is also included under this umbrella. The A-F programs include:
Volunteer Handyperson Program: Background-checked volunteers provide free help with small household tasks. This includes changing light bulbs, fixing loose doorknobs, and hanging pictures.
Safety & Fall Prevention: The program distributes free salted sand buckets during the winter to keep walkways safe and clear of ice.
Nutritional Support: Collaborates with local agricultural networks to offer the Maine Senior Farm Share program, providing free fresh produce from local farms to eligible seniors.
Local Senior Hubs: Partners closely with the YMCA Trafton Senior Center and the Southern Maine Agency on Aging (SMAA) to connect residents with community cafés, adult day programs, wellness exercise classes, and Medicare counseling.
Sanford is another example of a Maine town where many different types of programs and partners come together to serve the entire community.
